Day of Silence 3/17/2009On Friday, April 17, the students of the Sky and Lake (ages 9-14) hd the opportunity to participate in the Day of Silence, is a national event in its 13th year. During the day, students from across the country choose not to speak in order to support those who cannot speak about their sexual orientation or gender identity. The purpose of the Day of Silence is to get people thinking about how it might feel to be silenced about their identity and to bring attention to the effect bullying has on people.
Teachers agreed to allow participating Wingra students to be silent for the whole day. The students wore ribbons so that people knew why they weren't talking. Participating students also had cards to give out, as a way to explain the Day of Silence without speaking.
